‘HOW DO YOU know what goes where?’

Aaron glanced at Chelsea’s perplexed face as they stood side by side, looking at all the pieces he’d laid out on the floor so he could see what was what. ‘This isn’t my first rodeo, you know.’

‘It doesn’t look enough. Is it enough?’

‘Sure.’

‘How do you know? All I see are a bunch of differing lengths of plank and a gazillion screws. With no instructions.’

He shrugged. ‘I’ve grown up tinkering with things. All kinds of engines, running repairs on sheds and fences and water troughs and windmills and tanks and dams. It’s just...what you do when you’re in the middle of nowhere, with not a lot available and not a lot of money for new things or to hire someone to come and fix stuff. You learn to do things for yourself. To improvise and be resourceful—use what you have at hand.’

She nodded, her head turned slightly to look at him. ‘So, you’re a...jack of all trades?’

Aaron laughed, glancing at her. ‘Something like that.’

She smiled at him then and he smiled back, and Aaron was aware, once again, how close they were. For a second, he even let himself imagine he was free to lift one of those strands of hair off her neck and drop a kiss in its place. Then he gave himself a mental slap upside the head.

‘Okay. Let’s get this show on the road.’
